The Delaware Residence is a 2,500 SF, three-bedroom residence situated on a 13-acre site. Conceived as a contemporary interpretation of a rural farmhouse, the home is organized as two elongated, split-gable volumes. The primary facade is oriented south to optimize passive solar gain in winter while a continuous overhang mitigates summer heat. Beneath this overhang a linear wood deck extends the full length of the house, framing views toward an on-site pond. The exterior is clad primarily in untreated larch siding, detailed as vertical tongue-and-groove, allowing the material to weather naturally over time. The standing seam metal roof further reinforces the building’s farmhouse reference.
The entry sequence draws from traditional Japanese precedents. A recessed vestibule with a lowered floor plane establishes a threshold condition where shoes are removed before stepping up into the main living level. Beyond this point the plan opens into a combined dining area and expansive kitchen. At the terminus of the kitchen, a raised tatami room provides a more intimate and culturally-specific setting for dining and hosting.
Opposite the kitchen, the living room anchors the central communal space. A hallway extending from the tatami room leads to two children’s bedrooms connected by a shared Jack-and-Jill bathroom. The primary suite is located at the end of this sequence, providing privacy and separation from the rest of the house.
