COhatch Bexley is a 10,000 SF coworking office and event space located in historic downtown Bexley, Ohio. The project transforms an existing split-level, mid-century office building into a multi-level workplace. A two-story addition to the front facade establishes a new identity and forges a stronger connection to the street through its massing and use of materials. The limestone cladding connects past and present, referencing both the existing building and the surrounding civic context where the material can be found in local landmarks such as the Bexley Public Library, Christ Lutheran Church, and Torat Emet Synagogue.
To establish continuity with the original architecture, the addition’s facade reinterprets the existing building’s 3-foot-wide window bays into solid wall segments flanked by expansive glazing. The former opaque stone facade is replaced with light, transparency, and engagement. This inversion both honors the rhythm of the original structure and opens the building to the street.

The existing office suffered from a lack of natural light— especially on the lower floors. Large skylights and the selective removal of portions of the upper floor remediate this issue, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the building’s core while preserving the existing load-bearing wall. The result is a layered, double-height atrium that is both functional and dramatic.
