Community for New Direction (CND) is a non-profit outreach organization providing mental health and substance use disorder treatment. The Livingston campus transforms a pair of existing 12,000 SF office buildings to provide counseling offices, outpatient medical treatment facilities, and an administrative suite. The design strikes a balance between capturing CND’s enthusiastic identity while adhering to a tight budget by embracing a simple interior design punctuated by strategic, high-impact interventions. The existing exterior is untouched aside from a bright orange entry portal and signaling the buildings’ revitalized function.
The interior design starts with a neutral palette of pale green, white, and rich wood intended to bring a homey, inviting atmosphere. Most of the structural shell is reused and left exposed with the exception of the entry and reception areas where existing walls and floors were removed to create a double-height atrium. The dynamic entry sequence and reception area expresses CND’s community focus where it has the most impact. Murals painted by volunteers in the community are placed throughout the building to bring pops of color and vitality.
